Characters

Scarecrow

Real Name: Jonathan Crane

Base of Operations: Gotham City

Group Affiliation: Legion of Doom

Powers: The Scarecrow has no known super powers. Instead, he relies on his sinister mind and fear-inducing devices. His fear-inducing devices are capable of subduing individuals with the strongest of wills.

Origin/History: As a boy, young Jonathan Crane was often the target of his neighborhood’s bullies. Seeking revenge on his enemies, Jonathan dedicated himself to understanding the nature of fear and phobia. Later, he became a renowned psychologist and began teaching at Gotham City University but was dismissed after being charged with refusing to follow the university’s safety regulations and for his unorthodox teaching methods. The blow to Crane’s career caused him to snap. He donned the guise of the Scarecrow to extract vengeance on those who had wronged him. This caused him to cross paths with Batman and Robin who have since defeated him several times.

Moment of Glory: In the Super Friends episode “The Trial of The Super Friends”, the Legion of Doom hatches a plot to steal the Super Friends power-devices including Wonder Woman’s magic lasso, Green Lantern’s power-ring, and Batman and Robin’s utility belts. Scarecrow is assigned to steal the Dynamic Duo’s utility belts from them while they are guarding a new invention called “The Liquid Light” from a government research plant. While Batman and Robin are guarding the plant, the Scarecrow arrives and taunts the Dynamic Duo from the other side of the fence that surrounds the plant. Batman comments that to the Scarecrow that the fence is electrified and that the Scarecrow will never get past it. All of a sudden, a large flock of crows fly over the fence and lift the Dynamic Duo into the air while the Scarecrow comments that he doesn’t need to get past the fence because his crows already have. Subsequently, the Scarecrow uses a magnetic gun to pull the Dynamic Duo’s utility belts off of them and takes the belts back to the Hall of Doom.

Moment of Shame: In the Super Friends episode “The Secret Origins of The Super Friends”, the Legion of Doom has gone back in time to stop Hal Jordan from receiving his power-ring and becoming Green Lantern. Lex Luthor is successful in convincing Hal Jordan not go to the dying Abin Sur and instead takes his place and receives Abin Sur’s power-ring and costume. Luthor uses the power-ring to fly back to the Hall of Doom and when the Scarecrow sees him, he panics and say “Oh no! It’s the Green Lantern!” I really have to wonder why the Scarecrow would be concerned in the least bit when even if it was the real Green Lantern, the odds would have been twelve against one as he would be taking on the entire Legion of Doom (minus Luthor) by himself.
