Characters

Aquaman

Real Name: Orin aka Arthur Curry

Base of Operations: Atlantis, The Oceans of The World

Group Affiliation: The Super Friends, The Justice League of America

Powers: Aquaman has super-strength, super-speed(swimming only), enhanced senses, increased durability, and telepathic control over marine life. His abilities are at their peak when he is in water and slowly start to decline when he is out of water. In the comics, Aquaman also has a mystic water hand that has healing capabilities. He also carries with him the Trident of Poseidon which is capable of firing mystical energy blasts. Earlier on he was shown to be able to utilize water as projectiles. He was never seen to have done this during his tenure with the SuperFriends.

Weaknesses – Being out of water for more than an hour severly diminishes Aquaman’s strength. He will eventually start dying if he is not immersed in water shortly after the one hour time limit.

Origin/History: Aquaman’s origins were not delved into in his solo adventures or as a part of the SuperFriends. In the comics, Aquaman is the son of the Atlantean couple Queen Atlanna and the wizard Atlan. He was abandoned by his parents due to being born with blonde hair as Atlanteans believed being born with blonde hair was a sign of the “Mark of Kordax”(an Atlantean curse). Aquaman was subsequently raised by by a lighthouse keeper name Arthur Curry who then named Aquaman Arthur Jr. Once he became an adult, he made his way around the world and was nicknamed “Aquaman” by the media. From there, he started on his quest to become a hero and protect the oceans of the world. As seen in his solo series, Aquaman and Aqualad along with the mysterious Mera protect Atlantis whilst in exile. Unlike the other Atlanteans, who are confined to bubbled cities under the sea, these three can breathe underwater. Some time later, Aquaman, without his two partners joins the SuperFriends/Justice League of America.

Known Enemies: Black Manta, Ocean Master, The Human Flying Fish, The Fisherman, and The Shark

Moment of Glory: In the Super Friends episode “The Time Trap”, the Legion of Doom traps several members of the Super Friends in the past. Aquaman and Apache Chief are stranded by Black Manta and Giganta in prehistoric times. When all seems lost about returning to the present, Aquaman comes up with an idea to have his Justice League communicator set off a signal in the present to alert the rest of the Super Friends to his and Apache Chief’s predicament in the past. Shortly afterwards, Superman journeys to the past to rescue the stranded heroes.

Moment of Shame: In the Super Friends’ episode “The Final Challenge”, a mystical being known as Vartox kidnaps Aquaman and several other members of the Super Friends and the Legion of Doom. He pits one member of the Super Friends against one member of the Legion of Doom in various contests to determine their fate. Aquman and Black Manta are faced with the task of seeing who came make it through the River of Doom first. While in their journey, Black Manta is captured by a giant clam. He calls out to Aquaman for help. Aquaman quickly comes to Black Manta’s aid and frees him only to be trapped by the giant clam himself.

Quote: “Black Manta! I should have know that you’d be responsible for such a fiendous act!”
